A cohort study of epilepsy among 665,000 insured dogs: incidence, mortality and survival after diagnosis.

This article summarizes the incidence and mortality of epilepsy using the records of the Swedish insurance database. Male Boxer dogs had the highest risk and mortality rates. Median survival time was longer in dogs kept as pets vs. working dogs. Genetic predisposition to epilepsy can be derived from the marked breed differences. The incidence of epilepsy was 18 per 10,000 dog-years at-risk.
