Effects of limited food consumption on the incidence of hip dysplasia in growing dogs.

This study investigates the effect of limiting food consumption on the incidence of hip dysplasia in 48 growing Labrador retrievers paired by sex and weight at 6-weeks-old, randomly assigned to ad libitum control feeding (CF) or 25% diet restriction (DR) with the same diet from the age of 8 weeks. Hip joints were x-rayed when the dogs were 30, 42, 54, 78, and 104 weeks old, and the subluxation of the joint was measured by the Norberg angle on standardized radiographs. Less subluxation of the femoral heads was found in the DR group, irrespective of age at which the radiography was done, and less hip dysplasia was found in the DR group when the dogs were 2 years old.
