There are many products in the veterinary market purported to contain probiotics that exert a beneficial effect on dogs and cats. Enterococcus faecium SF68 (FortiFlora,® Nestlé Purina PetCare Co., St. Louis, MO) is one of the most widely studied products. Administration of this product has been shown to have immunomodulating effects in dogs and cats. In addition, use of SF68 has been shown to aid in the management of dogs and cats with diarrhoea in animal shelters. This paper will detail several studies describing the use of SF68 in dogs and cats with an emphasis on gastrointestinal diseases.
