A study of environmental and behavioural factors that may be associated with feline idiopathic cystitis.

This study was performed with the aim of determining whether or not any environmental or behavioural factors, particularly those associated with stress, were linked with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC). The study (performed using questionnaires) compared information from 31 cats with FIC with 24 cats in the same households that did not have FIC. These were also compared with a 125 clinically healthy cats who acted as controls. Results showed that the cats with FIC were significantly more likely to be male, overweight and pedigree and experiencing the stress of living with another cat with which there was conflict. The results support the theory that stress may be implicated in some cases of FIC.
