Omega-3 fatty acids, hepatic lipid metabolism, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

This article reviews the use of omega-3 fatty acids in the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in human beings. NAFLD might be predisposed by the westernized diets, with a marked higher consumption of omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids that cloud increase the production of proinflammatory eicosanoids derived from arachidonic acid and impaired liver and adipose tissue functions. Recent studies show promising effects of omega-3 fatty acids, but more research in needed to establish the exact dose, duration of treatment and the exact benefit on the different features of NAFLD.
