Anticonvulsant profile of caprylic acid, a main constituent of the medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) ketogenic diet, in mice.

This study investigated if caprylic acid (CA), main constituent of medium chain triglyceride ketogenic diets, has acute anticonvulsant effects in mice used for seizure tests and its pharmacokinetic interaction with valproate (VPA). Ca and VPA concentrations were measured in plasma and brain. Different concentrations of oral CA and i.p. VPA were used before different methods to induce seizures. CA, at the same concentrations as those achieved with MCT ketogenic diets, has acute anticonvulsant properties and potentiates the effect of VPA.
