Antioxidant status in rheumatoid arthritis and role of antioxidant therapy.

This study evaluated the importance of antioxidant therapy in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as oxygen free radicals are thought to be involved in tissue damage in this condition. They used a group of 40 patients with RA, randomly allocated into 2 treatment groups. One received the traditional treatment. The other received supplemental antioxidants as well as the traditional treatment. Blood samples were taken at the beginning of the study and 12 weeks after. A marker of oxidative stress such as malondialdehyde (MDA), and the antioxidants thiols, glutathione and vitamin C were measured. The concentrations of these antioxidants increased after the treatment, while the concentration of MDA was decreased. This suggests the therapeutic importance of supplemental antioxidants to counteract lipid peroxidation, a possible cause of tissue damage in these patients. More studies are required for a definite conclusion around safety and efficacy of antioxidant therapy in patient with RA.
