Differential metabolic effects of energy restriction in dogs using diets varying in fat and fiber content.

This study evaluated the fat and fiber content of the diet during energy restriction (60% of the calculated MER for ideal body weight) for obesity management in 12 male castrated dogs during 7 weeks. 6 dogs received a high fat, low fiber diet (35.4kcal% from fat, 2.9% dry matter basis). The others received a low fat, high fiber (24.5kcal% from fat, 27% dry matter basis). The low fat, high fiber diet caused significantly greater body fat and serum cholesterol decreases, as well as not statistically significant reduction in body weight and mean arterial pressure.
