Dog model of therapeutic ketosis induced by oral administration of R,S-1,3-butanediol diacetoacetate.

This study investigates if it is possible to induce ketosis in dogs by repeated ingestion of a precursor of ketone bodies with or without carbohydrates. Two conditions were applied: the precursor could not provide more than 50% of the caloric intake or use more than half of the liver capacity to oxidize it. The level of ketosis achieved with this canine model was lower than that of children whose epilepsy is controlled with a ketogenic diet.
