Effects of diet restriction on life span and age-related changes in dogs.

This study investigates the effect of limiting food consumption on the lifespan and markers of aging in 48 growing Labrador retrievers paired by sex and weight at 6-weeks-old, randomly assigned to ad libitum control feeding (CF) or 25% diet restriction (DR) with the same diet from the age of 8 weeks. Markers of aging, body condition and composition were measured annually, and the age at onset of chronic diseases and median and maximum life spans were recorded. Life span was significantly superior in DR dogs, and the age at onset of chronic diseases was delayed in this group compared to CF dogs.
