Effects of dietary phosphorus and protein in dogs with chronic renal failure.

This study investigates the impact of varying levels of dietary protein (16%, 32%) and phosphorus (P) (0.4%, 1.4%) on 48 dogs with surgically reduced renal mass. After 3 months with a common diet (16% protein, 0.4% P), dogs were distributed in 4 groups with the same mean glomerular filtration rate and received and one of the 4 diets for 24 months. 24 dogs suffered uraemia during the study. 0.4% P diets enhanced dog survival, but protein level had no significant influence on this. The lower amount of P increased the period that glomerular filtration rate remained stable.
