Enhancing brain functions in senior dogs: a new nutritional approach.

This article reviews behavioural, morphological, and metabolic changes in the brain associated with aging and reviews a novel nutritional solution for the age- related metabolic changes in the canine brain. Aging appears to cause a variety of metabolic and morphological changes in the brain which eventually can lead to cognitive impairment and even cognitive dysfunction syndrome (dementia) in senior dogs. These age- related changes appear to be gradual, progressive and irreversible and adversely affect the quality of life of both dogs and their owners. When it comes to the management of brain aging prevention of age related changes by correcting early metabolic changes and eliminating risk factors is preferable to attempting management once the condition is clinically evident.
