Epilepsy beyond seizures: a review of the impact of epilepsy and its comorbidities on health-related quality of life in dogs.

This paper reviews quality of life (QoL) issues surrounding canine epileptic patients. It examines research performed into QoL issues in human epilepsy- especially its impact on physical, psychological and cognitive health. It also provides a summary of current knowledge regarding canine epilepsy- identifying possible threats to QoL because little is currently known regarding the neurobehavioural, emotional and cognitive effects of epilepsy upon affected dogs. Owners of dogs with epilepsy are known to consider their dog's quality of life (QoL) is of greater importance to them than seizure frequency and the authors comment that treatment interventions pose a fine balance between potential benefits and harm to the patient.
