Induction processes in blood-brain transfer of ketone bodies during starvation.

This study investigated the ability of ketone bodies to pass through the blood brain barrier of rats in a fed and fasted/ starved state. The brain uptake index of ketone bodies increased significantly with increasing duration of starvation, indicating adaptation to ketonaemia but the uptake of glucose was not influenced by starvation or ketonaemia.
