Management of refractory epilepsy.

Refractory epilepsy (ineffective seizure control or unacceptable side effects to treatment) occurs in around one-third of dogs with epilepsy. There is therefore huge interest in finding alternative treatment options for these dogs. Three areas are being researched and these are examined in this article. The three areas are: 1) New antiepileptic drugs such as gabapentin, zonisamide, levetiracetam, and pregabalin which are currently used in humans; 2) Electrical stimulation of the brain and 3) Dietary modification. Additional randomized controlled trials are needed to better evaluate all these therapies for refractory epilepsy in dogs and cats.
