Pathophysiology and management of canine colonic diseases

This article reviews the physiology of canine colon, the most common diseases and treatment. Large bowel diarrhoea is mainly caused by diet and infectious or parasitic agents. The most common form of inflammatory bowel disease in the colon is lymphocytic–plasmacytic colitis, to be suspected when no etiologic or dietary agent can be found. Constipation should be diagnosed and treated or controlled to avoid progression to megacolon.
