Probiotics and gastrointestinal disease: successes, problems and future prospects.

New therapeutic approaches for gastrointestinal disease are a need due to the lack of knowledge on the exact aetiology of some conditions and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. This article reviews the results of many studies about probiotics, highlighting strategies to create designer probiotics that can overcome physiological and technological weak points that make them unusable, such as receptor mimicry or pathogen derived genes to make more robust probiotic strains.
