Is there a role for dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation in canine renal disease?

This paper discusses the potential benefits of fatty acids in the management of renal disease in dogs as these could delay the progression of renal disease through the modification of glomerular hemodynamics and decrease of glomerular hypertension. Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) seem to increase glomerular hypertension, whereas omega-3 PUFA prevent the decline of the glomerular filtration rate. The potential benefits of Omega-3 PUFA in different varieties of renal diseases have to be addressed with new clinical trials.
