Effect of dietary phosphate restriction on renal secondary hyperparathyroidism in the cat.

This prospective study of cats with chronic renal failure compared the feeding of a regular adult maintenance diet with feeding a restricted phosphorus and protein diet (with or without an additional phosphate binder) on plasma phosphate and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations. 15 cats accepted the restricted diet and the remaining 8 were fed the maintenance diet. Results showed that feeding the restricted diet led to a significant fall in plasma phosphate and PTH concentrations by five months- with only 2 cats requiring phosphate binders. Euparathyroidism was achieved in eight cats. Conversely in 7 of the 8 cats fed the maintenance diet, PTH concentrations increased.
