Chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats.

Chronic renal failure is very common in companion animals. The disease course is progressive but dietary modification and pharmacologic agents may improve quality and quantity of life. Management consists of provision of nutritional support, treating hypokalaemia and metabolic acidosis, reducing proteinuria, maintaining hydration, decreasing toxin retention (eg nitrogen-containing compounds), avoiding other renal insults, improving anaemia, minimising renal secondary hyperparathyroidism and hyperphosphataemia, and reducing hypertension if present. Regular monitoring is essential because of the progressive nature of the disease.
