Retrospective study of the survival of cats with acquired chronic renal insufficiency offered different commercial diets.

This retrospective study compared the survival of cats with chronic renal failure fed a variety of diets- both regular maintenance diets and 7 commercial diets designed for cats with renal failure. The median survival time of the 175 cats fed regular maintenance diets was just seven months, whereas the median survival time of 146 cats given one of the seven renal diets was 16 months. The cats fed the most beneficial of the renal diets had a median survival time of 23 months and those on the least beneficial diet had a median survival time of 12 months. The composition of the seven diets was largely similar, except that the most beneficial diet had a particularly high content of eicosapentaenoic acid.
