Comparison of measured and predicted energy expenditure in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Obesity increases the risk of liver cancer in human patients with cirrhosis. To prevent overfeeding and obesity in these patients, an accurate estimation of energy requirement is important. The aim of this study was to investigate resting energy expenditure (REE) and energy intake in patients with cirrhosis and determine adequate energy intake criteria. Results showed that the average energy intake was 30.5 kcal/kg BW, which was 1.4 times greater than Resting Energy Expenditure per kg body weight. Although Dietary Reference Intakes are a useful tool for the estimation of Resting Energy Expenditure in patients in the second and third quartiles of BMI, indirect calorimetry is recommended to ensure adequate nutritional care for patients with cirrhosis, including those in the highest and lowest quartiles of BMI.
